Supervisor Campos introduces resolution to recognize Portola as the Garden District; community leaders back designation

Supervisor David Campos on Sept. 20 introduced a resolution to recognize the Portola neighborhood as the Portola Garden District, citing the neighborhood’s historic greenhouse sites, active community gardening and a long-running garden tour.
"My office has been working closely with Portola leaders and stakeholders," Campos said, calling the Portola a place with a "unique history" and an enduring tradition of urban agriculture. He noted that the neighborhood grew flowers and vegetables historically and that some historic greenhouses still remain on Woolsey Street. Campos said the resolution recognizes residents and organizations that maintain community gardens and helps position the neighborhood for future investment in public green spaces.
The introduction drew extensive public comment supporting the resolution. Residents, small-business owners and nonprofit leaders described the annual Portola Garden Tour, neighborhood greening efforts, tree-planting projects and community organizations such as the Portola Urban Greening Committee, Help McLaren Park and the Greenhouse Project. Verna Shaheen said, "The Portola has a deep, rich history of garden identity," and urged the board to support formal recognition.
Campos also announced a separate resolution extending the deadline for applications to the city's legacy business grant program, aimed at improving access to legacy-business funds due to implementation delays; that item was part of his introductions of new business and will appear on a future calendar.
