Board urges MTA to preserve Van Ness historic street lamps as BRT work proceeds

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution on Sept. 20 urging the Municipal Transportation Agency to make every effort to preserve or replicate the historic street-lamp network along Van Ness Avenue as part of the Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit project.

Supervisor Aaron Peskin, who introduced the resolution, said the request is intended to reconcile historic preservation with a major transit upgrade. "We can speed up headways for our buses… and we can preserve a little bit of our patrimony and our history," Peskin told the board, adding the city should seek solutions that achieve both efficiency and preservation.

Members of multiple preservation and neighborhood organizations testified in favor of the measure during public comment. Lynn Neuhaus Siegel of the Pacific Heights Residents Association said the street lamps contribute to San Francisco's civic character and urged the board to preserve them. "These iconic features are important to the identity of our city," she said. Other supporters included San Francisco Beautiful, San Francisco Heritage, the Victorian Alliance and the Coalition for San Francisco Neighborhoods.

Supporters pointed to language in the Van Ness environmental review that acknowledged the lamps’ visual and historic significance and urged that replacement poles retain the architectural style of the originals if removal is unavoidable. Several speakers said modern pole designs proposed by the MTA would be inappropriate for the corridor’s historic character.

Supervisor Peskin offered technical amendments—adjusting counts and correcting geographic references—that the board adopted without objection. The resolution as amended passed unanimously on a roll call.

Why this matters Van Ness is scheduled for a major transit upgrade and streetscape changes. The resolution instructs the MTA to evaluate retaining historic fixtures and to design any replacements to reflect the corridor’s historic character, balancing transit upgrades with preservation goals.
