The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on July 7 amended a resolution to increase the city's proposed affordable housing general obligation bond to $310,000,000 and unanimously advanced the amended measure while tabling a second, related $350,000,000 resolution.
Supervisor Farrell moved the amendment and asked colleagues to adopt the circulated change to increase the amount for item 7. "I'd like to make a motion to amend... raise the amount of the affordable housing bond to $310,000,000 and then I'll also, concurrently make a motion to table item number 8," Supervisor Farrell said. Supervisor Avalos seconded the amendment. The board took the amendment "without objection," and the clerk announced the amendment passed unanimously.
Nut graf: The vote preserves the board's effort to place a funded affordable housing measure on the November ballot while postponing consideration of a separate, larger authorization. Supervisors who spoke supported the larger bond and stressed the need to pair bond funding with other budget actions and programs to address displacement.
Board members praised the negotiated increase and pledged to continue work on complementary budget items. Supervisor Campos said the board had also included $25,000,000 in the budget process "which we hope will be made available as quickly as possible in terms of funding, moving forward." Supervisor Mar highlighted attention to Mission District sites and displacement concerns.
After passing the amendment, the board voted to move item 7 forward with a positive recommendation and to table item 8. The clerk announced: "Without objection, item number 7 is moved forward as amended with positive recommendation, and item number 8 is tabled unanimously."
Background: The board discussed this bond during its budget process and reported adding $10 million to the mayor's original proposal. Sponsors said the measure is intended to fund acquisition, rehabilitation and construction of affordable housing and to pair with other budget actions under development.
Ending: The amended resolution will proceed through the board's process and, per speakers, may appear on the November ballot; the companion $350 million resolution (item 8) was tabled for later consideration. No final ballot language or ordinance text for the bond was adopted at the July 7 meeting.
