City reports recent paving work, new paver and community outreach on closures

Tampa's Mobility Department presented a quarterly resurfacing update, reporting multiple street paving projects completed and a recently commissioned paver to improve productivity.

Brandon Campbell, interim director of the Mobility Department, listed completed and ongoing resurfacing work including Virginia Park, Woodlawn at Himes, areas south of Gandy, North Boulevard and a reconfiguration on Rocky Point Drive. He said crews performed much of the work in-house and that three of the projects also used contractor support for milling. Campbell said a second, newer paver was added to the fleet to replace an older unit and that crews expect improved efficiency and fewer breakdowns.

Campbell answered council questions about staffing, saying paving crews are generally dedicated to paving work but can be reassigned across similar functions when needed; he acknowledged a few vacancies but said personnel were reallocated to cover critical needs. He also described coordination with other capital projects and noted the resurfacing map does not change lane configurations that were not part of the current projects.

Campbell said the City will hold a community meeting for Virginia Park and Sunset Park to discuss stormwater and detour impacts for a southbound closure at Bay to Bay; he said additional signing adjustments and temporary traffic controls are being evaluated to limit inappropriate cut-throughs on neighborhood streets.

Council members thanked crews for progress and asked staff to prioritize speed-calming and advance community notice on planned detours to reduce neighborhood impacts.

No formal council action was recorded on resurfacing projects during the presentation.
