The owner/contractor asked to replace an earlier-proposed curved roof with a shallow roof and a Juliet balcony so the upper opening would read as a door from inside and show a railing on the left elevation visible from the street.
Contractor John Ray presented drawings showing the modified roof and a narrow Juliet balcony with a low-profile railing. The commission discussed materials for the railing; the applicant said the railing could be aluminum or vinyl for low maintenance. Commissioners noted the balcony is visible only from a limited left-side elevation and likely would not display fine detail from the public right-of-way; a commissioner observed the balcony "gave it a little better appeal." The commission approved the change, and the motion passed on a roll-call vote.
The approval notes the balcony is an addition to a rear/side elevation and does not attempt to create a false historic feature. Staff will retain the submitted drawings in the permit file and the applicant will proceed with the approved roof change and railing material indicated on the drawings.
