Board discussion flags payroll errors tied to sixth-hour FTE calculations; district to correct paychecks
Summary
Board members questioned a personnel report that showed multiple teachers listed at 1.056 FTE for a sixth-hour assignment. Staff told the board some calculations were incorrect for about eight employees and that the district will correct payroll on the Oct. 3 pay date and adjust FTE reporting moving forward.

Board members used the Sept. 24 meeting to press district staff about how the district computed fractional full-time-equivalent (FTE) pay for teachers taking a sixth instructional hour and about apparent paycheck errors.
A group of employees appeared on the personnel list with an FTE of 1.056 tied to a sixth-hour assignment for a single trimester. Board members asked why the increment was 0.056 and how the district would handle multi-trimester or full-year sixth-hour assignments.
Staff explained that the fractional increase reflects how the district translates an extra sixth hour into pay when the extra hour is for one trimester only. If a teacher picks up a sixth hour for all three trimesters, staff said the proper full-year FTE would be a larger increment (approximately 1.167 when a full-year sixth hour is included). The personnel and payroll staff acknowledged that some records were miscalculated during the initial rollout of trimester-based hour accounting.
On pay errors and remedy
A district staff member acknowledged “there were about 8 individuals that were incorrectly calculated.” The payroll office informed affected staff that they would be fully corrected on the Oct. 3 payroll and that the district would catch up retroactively. Administrators blamed turnover in the human-resources team and the transition to trimester accounting for some of the initial errors.
Board members discussed whether approving the personnel report at the meeting would delay payroll corrections; staff said corrections could be handled administratively and that corrections would be made without delaying salaries. The board asked for an amended personnel report next month reflecting corrected FTEs and payroll adjustments.
The board did not take separate formal action on the personnel report at the meeting; staff said they would return an amended report for approval the following month and have October payroll reflect fixes.
