Council recognizes Saint Paul Parks youth basketball champions; free sports program praised

The St. Paul City Council voted to adopt a resolution recognizing youth participants, families and coaches from the 2024–25 Saint Paul Parks and Recreation basketball league.
Shana Abraham, rec services manager for Saint Paul Parks and Recreation, told the council the city is “one of the only communities in the country that offers free sports” and said the league had 95 teams this year with 20 teams representing the city at the Recreation State tournament. Abraham named four championship teams from Frogtown, Dayton’s Bluff, Wilder and MLK and highlighted runner-up and third-place finishes across neighborhoods.
Councilmembers praised the department, coaches and families. Vice President Kim said she looked forward to having a trophy ‘‘like that’’ at her community center and called the teams’ achievements a source of pride for the city. Councilmember Johnson commended the young people for speaking at the meeting, and Councilmember Bowie emphasized the city’s investment and coaches’ leadership.
The council suspended the rules to consider Resolution 25-564 and then adopted the resolution by roll call vote; six members voted in favor with no opposition.
The resolution recognizes the league’s contribution to equity and youth development and expresses the council’s gratitude to staff, coaches and volunteers. The participants were invited to the dais during the meeting; several youth and their coaches introduced themselves and spoke briefly about what they like about Saint Paul.
