At the April 1 meeting the Isanti County Board of Commissioners passed two resolutions: one supporting retention of local zoning authority and opposing state action that would curtail county and municipal planning control, and one expressing support for a One County, One Senator proposal aimed at increasing rural representation.
Commissioners said the zoning resolution was intended to support the county’s Planning and Zoning Department and to align the county with nearby cities such as Cambridge and Isanti that have adopted similar measures. Commissioners referenced accessory dwelling unit (ADU) provisions in pending state discussions and said they want local control over how ADUs are regulated.
On the One County, One Senator resolution, commissioners described the vote as symbolic but useful to signal local support for greater rural representation; board members acknowledged that a state constitutional amendment would likely be required for that change and that the Association of Minnesota Counties had not taken a formal stance because the proposal had not yet had committee hearings.
The board voted unanimously on both resolutions and directed staff to share the zoning resolution with local cities and legislators.
