Housing Authority says federal uncertainty halts new vouchers; wait list closed

The Housing Authority of the City and County of San Francisco told commissioners on March 30 that federal funding uncertainty has forced the agency to close its wait list and pause issuing new Housing Choice Vouchers.
“We receive roughly 96% of our funding from the federal government via the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development,” CEO Tanya Leggett said. “The current funding environment simply does not allow for new HCV recipients.”
Leggett said the authority is monitoring the federal budget process closely and coordinating with the mayor’s office, the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development and HUD to determine how to protect current residents and what steps would be necessary should funding be reduced. She said the authority’s immediate goal is to keep existing households housed while continuing to assess options as federal guidance and appropriations become clearer.
Commissioners and public commenters pressed for clarity about how potential federal changes would affect local residents and programs. The commission did not vote on any new policy related to vouchers at the March 30 meeting, but members asked staff to continue reporting back as the federal picture becomes clearer.
The CEO’s remarks echoed earlier comments from the chair: commissioners had noted concerns about recent federal actions and asked the CEO to brief the body on possible local impacts.
