Board approves contract with Dr. Jeff Burnett to provide psychological evaluations at juvenile center

The St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners on April 1 approved a contract with Dr. Jeff Burnett, a licensed clinical psychologist, to provide mental health services at the Thomas and Frederick Juvenile Justice Center (JJC).
Tara Payano, director of operations at the JJC, said Burnett’s duties include evaluation of juveniles’ mental health, consultation with the JJC director of mental health, review and approval of psychological evaluations on request, and assistance with other clinical services as needed. The contract pays $250 per hour, with an average of three hours per week but capped at 10 hours per week.
Payano told the board the county has budgeted funds in the contractor services line to cover the work. Commissioners Morton, Hazen and Baxmayer/Maxmeier voted aye to approve the employment contract.
The contract is effective upon execution; staff said they would manage hours within the stated weekly cap.
