Organizers preview Buck Days line-up, youth scholarships and expanded robotics events

The Buccaneer Commission and city staff presented council members with highlights for the upcoming 87th annual Buck Days Festival, scheduled May 1–11, including a parade, expanded rodeo competition, robotics tournaments and family events.
Johnny Filippillo, president and CEO of the Buccaneer Commission, said last year’s events drew roughly 80,000 paid attendees and that the Commission distributed scholarships—$2.3 million historically raised through Buck Days and $306,000 in giving last year alone—to students and local organizations. Filippillo said organizers will stage the parade April 26 (a change to separate the parade from the main festival) and leverage new staging property to improve float logistics.
The event will host a Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Velocity Tour finals stop and an expanded rodeo with approximately $707,000 in payouts, Filippillo said, putting Corpus Christi’s rodeo among the highest-paying events in North America. The festival will also host multiple robotics events, including state UIL championships on May 10 and large competitive student robotics displays in early May.
Council members thanked organizers and noted the festival’s economic and cultural contributions to downtown and the coastal tourism economy. Filippillo and City Manager Peter Zanoni said staff will distribute the presentation packet to council and continue city coordination on parking, ADA access and transit/shuttle routes.
