District foundation outlines scholarship awards, fundraising and summer programs

The North Platte Public Schools Foundation reported on a piano refurbishment fundraiser, plans to award 25 scholarships totaling more than $25,000 to the graduating class, partnerships for summer programming and upcoming fundraising events.
At the April 14 meeting Terry Birchell presented the North Platte Public Schools Foundation report to the board, describing recent and upcoming fundraising and scholarship activity.
Birchell said the foundation’s “dancing with the local stars” event generated funds for a piano that is being refurbished in Kearney; the foundation is coordinating shipping and crate construction for the instrument and will direct funds to the high-school fine-arts program. The foundation also expects to award 25 scholarships totaling over $25,000 to the 2025 graduating class and is coordinating online scholarship review this year.
The foundation announced a partnership with Mid Plains Community College and a summer programs initiative called Summer Fun, with sign-up beginning April 21 and programming to be hosted at the rec center from about 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The foundation will provide stipends to district teachers who run summer classes through a homework-club fund; participants will pay a small fee for classes.
Fundraising notes included a car-wash partnership (Super Suds Carwash) scheduled to benefit elementary schools April 27–May 3 and a signature gala planned for July 25. Birchell also recognized donors and sponsors and introduced efforts to solicit nominations for district employee-of-the-year awards.
Principal Flanders and other building representatives joined the foundation in recognizing two McDonald Elementary staff members who had been nominated by colleagues for staff-member awards.
