Meridian screens 1,298 students; 318 receive free eyeglasses through district partnership

Meridian, a community vision partner, presented results from a screening program the company conducted at Wayne-Westland elementary schools: 1,298 students who returned permission slips were screened and 318 students received free eyeglasses, district staff told the board.
Amanda Fonnen, speaking for the district in introducing Meridian, said the organization provided screenings and eyeglass exams across nine of the district’s elementary schools. Meridian representatives shared recorded student statements about how glasses improved reading and classroom participation; one student said, “These glasses may be the best glasses ever. They are nice. They help me with long paragraphs and confusing papers and also things I can't see.”
Patty Graham, representing Meridian, described the partnership as a community engagement effort: “When you think about the impact that vision can give to a kiddo that can't see, it can be life changing.” Board members thanked Meridian and district staff for organizing the program and noted the practical classroom impacts of corrected vision.
Administrators said staff helped students pick frames and ensured proper fit, and they thanked Meridian for returning to the district and providing on-site services.
