The Tangipahoa Parish Council on April 14, 2025 adopted Ordinance 25-07 amending Chapter 36 (Planning and Development), Article 5 (standards for development of property) to add minimum standards for recreational vehicle (RV) parks and recreational campgrounds. The ordinance requires a minimum parcel size of 10 acres for RV parks, requires the property to be held by a single listed owner-entity, and limits spot rentals to no more than 14 days.
The changes were recommended by the parish Development Review Committee (DRC), council members said during the public hearing. At the opening of the public hearing a meeting official said, “The language that we'd added would be minimum of 10 acres.”
Council members adopted the ordinance by unanimous vote. The roll call recorded the ordinance adoption as passing 10 to 0.
Supporters of the change framed it as a way to set consistent development standards for campgrounds and RV parks; the DRC had reviewed and recommended the amendments before the council hearing. The ordinance text submitted for adoption identifies the three specific changes: (1) a 10-acre minimum lot size for an RV/recreational campground use; (2) requirement that property ownership be listed as a single entity; and (3) a limit on spot rentals to a 14-day maximum.
The ordinance will govern new RV-park and recreational-campground permits and applications submitted to the parish. The council did not specify a phased implementation schedule during the adoption; the ordinance was adopted during the regular meeting session following the public hearing.
Taxonomy and enforcement details in the ordinance reference Chapter 36 procedures; the DRC and parish planning staff will apply the new definitions and standards during future permit reviews.
Meeting context: the item was discussed at a public hearing earlier in the evening and then taken up again during the council’s regular business; the DRC recommendation was explicitly noted. No additional amendments to the ordinance were recorded on the council floor before the final vote.
