Wayne‑Westland recognizes a state arts award winner and winter athletic achievements

The Wayne-Westland Community School District board opened its meeting with student recognitions, honoring a preschool student who won a statewide arts award and celebrating numerous winter-season accomplishments across district athletics.
Carl Gerhardt, a 4‑year‑old at Stottlemyer Early Childhood Center, received the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children’s “Yes I Can” award in the arts. Keeli Gerhardt, Carl’s mother, told the board, “This award means so much to our family.” Teachers and classmates presented Carl’s artwork and the school community described art as a pathway for inclusion and developmental growth.
The board also recognized athletic teams from John Glenn and Wayne Memorial. Jason Malloy, athletic director at John Glenn, highlighted achievements across programs: the girls basketball team’s Final Four appearance, competitive cheer’s regional placements and new program GPA milestones, the girls bowling team’s state top‑8 finish and multiple state qualifiers, the boys swim team’s best record in John Glenn history and wrestling’s district and state qualifiers.
“Sports has done a great deal for me in my life,” Malloy said. “It is a privilege and an honor to serve kids, our students. I always say that this is not a job for me. It's a calling. It truly is.” Coaches and players came forward for photos and short remarks; coaches emphasized academic performance alongside athletic success.
Board members praised the students, coaches and families in attendance and noted the broader role extracurriculars play in student engagement.
