Council approves accommodation tax awards totaling about $197,562 amid procedural concerns

Fairfield County Council voted on April 14 to accept the Accommodation and Hospitality Tax Committees funding recommendations, approving awards to local organizations and programming totaling roughly $197,562.
County staff summarized the committees recommendations. Awards included $65,052 to the Chamber of Commerce; $60,000 to the South Carolina Railroad Museum; $5,000 to the Wings and Wheels Air Festival; $20,000 to Pine Tree Playhouse; and $47,500 to the Austin Trailhead of the Palmetto Trail (noted as half of the amount requested). Several other applications were not recommended by the committee.
At least two council members voiced concern about procedural aspects of the committee vote, saying the committee lacked a written charter or clear recusal procedures and that an apparent conflict of interest occurred during the committees vote on the Chamber award. One council member said an individual with a potential conflict should "physically leave the room" during a vote; another said their understanding was the affected vote was not counted. Other council members argued the council should trust the committee it had appointed.
After debate the council voted to accept the committees recommendations; the roll call showed a 5-2 vote in favor. The approved awards will be incorporated into the countys FY25 budget process.
