The Waukesha School District Student Services Committee on April 3 voted 5-0 to approve revisions to Policy 53.40, which updates the district’s approach to student accidents, illness, concussions and sudden cardiac arrest. The approved amendment adds language noting "the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs)" at the end of the second sentence in the policy’s accidents section and adds a cross reference to Policy 84.52, the district’s existing AED policy.
Committee member and presenter described the revision as aligning the policy with current best practices for identifying and responding to concussions and head injuries. "This policy has been revised to reflect the best practices regarding the health, safety, and welfare of students," the presenter said, summarizing the changes to symptom recognition, staff training and notification protocols.
Board member Mary Blake (board member) proposed explicitly adding AED training and recognition into the accidents section after noting the district’s recent work as a certified "heart smart" district and partnerships that helped place AEDs in schools. "I would like to make a recommendation that we change... to add that the superintendent may provide for an in service program on first aid and CPR procedures," Blake said, adding that inclusion of AEDs would reflect current practice.
Committee members agreed to add the phrase about AEDs and to cite Policy 84.52, which the presenter said already governs placement, training, oversight by the district medical advisor and use of AEDs in buildings. The motion to approve the policy as amended passed unanimously, 5-0.
