He said the new FDA leadership published an opinion piece and issued recommendations that would limit seasonal COVID vaccine recommendations primarily to people 65 and older and certain high‑risk groups and that the FDA had suggested a requirement that vaccine providers seeking broader authorizations run placebo‑controlled trials—an unusual step given existing vaccines. "The scientific process was skipped," he said, adding the county will monitor effects on vaccine availability, authorization and insurance coverage and that the department is prepared to analyze the implications locally.
The committee asked public health to continue monitoring both the large‑events planning and federal vaccine policy developments and to report back as needed.
