Carbon County sheriff turns over $51,000 in unclaimed property to county general fund

The Carbon County sheriff presented commissioners with a check for $51,000 for unclaimed property at the April 10 meeting in Jim Thorpe and said the funds will be refunded to the county general fund.
"The result of that which I'm going to present to the commissioners and I also gave to the treasurer as well as the controller is a check for $51,000 that will be refunded back to the county for unclaimed property," the sheriff said during the meeting.
The sheriff said the funds are unanticipated and that a small portion could be used to finalize some projects in the sheriff's office. Commissioners thanked the sheriff for recovering the funds and returning them to taxpayers. "On behalf of the taxpayers and the board of commissioners, a job well done," one commissioner said.
No formal vote was required beyond the acceptance and ratification of routine reports; the treasurer will process deposit to the county general fund. Commissioners said the board will consider how best to allocate or invest the refunded amount amid ongoing budget pressures.
The remarks were part of the county commissioners' regular meeting on April 10, 2025.
