Public commenters raised health and safety concerns about a proposed cell-tower location that would sit within tens to a few hundred meters of residences and a school.
"The research that has been done on 5G towers was done in the eighties before 5G was even dreamt of," said Simone Holyoke, who described herself as a researcher and said she had requested agenda time to present scientific material and was denied. "Where they're saying to put that thing is 39 meters from a residence and 299 from a school. The studies that have been done in other countries use 500 meters."
Leah Nielsen read a statement on behalf of another resident and described a family that had a cell tower on their property and later developed multiple cancers. "Even the possibility of harm is enough to keep cell towers away from homes and schools," she said, adding that families should have been part of siting decisions and that she would remove children from a school with a nearby tower.
Speakers asked for more public engagement and for officials to reconsider siting close to schools and residences. Council members who heard the comments did not take immediate action during the meeting; planning and zoning or future agenda items were suggested as venues for further review.
