Council members discussed a range of facilities and maintenance items affecting public kiosks, restrooms, the shuttle area and downtown parking.
Kiosk repairs and signage
Staff reported that several information kiosks show wood and cork deterioration, and that some stone facing is crumbling on certain kiosks. Options discussed included sanding and re‑varnishing the wood, replacing cork with felt to prevent bubbling, and adding a protective copper base around the kiosk posts. Staff suggested getting a contractor (Harrison was suggested) to inspect and provide a repair estimate and to evaluate potential vinyl or other low‑maintenance materials for posts.
Hand dryers and restroom fixtures
The council reviewed the condition of hand dryers in public restrooms. Staff said several existing units are failing and provided price guidance: a modern “air‑blade” style unit (Dyson model referenced) was quoted near $940 per unit in the discussion; alternative brands were noted as less expensive. Councilors asked staff to obtain formal quotes and to return with a replacement plan and costs.
Shuttle enhancement design / building finishes
Staff provided an update on design choices for a public‑safety / shuttle enhancement project tied to building finishes. A previously selected brick color would take 12 weeks for delivery and risk missing a desired July 1 in‑service date; staff identified an alternate that matches the wellness center eaves and would allow a faster schedule. A small increase in the flagpole cost and potential contingency for brick matching were noted; staff said the project remains within budget and would proceed pending vendor lead times. No formal additional appropriation was requested at this meeting.
Center Street / Ruby’s parking and retaining wall
Council discussed an inquiry from Ruby’s Inn regarding their planned building work and proposed changes to parking elevations between Ruby’s and a nearby diner. Ruby’s representatives told staff they plan a new building that will change the elevation of the area; staff and council discussed whether the city should build or require a retaining wall at a particular lot line. Council authorized staff to review Ruby’s proposal and coordinate paving plans — the city also noted planned asphalt work (a roughly $70,000 paving effort mentioned for coming months) and the need to avoid paying to pave areas that will be reworked by Ruby’s owner.
Parking‑lot striping quote
Staff mentioned a quote of $8,280 to restripe parking lines, stop bars and other markings around several municipal buildings. That work was noted but held pending coordination with other projects.
What the meeting did not decide
No final contractor selections or additional appropriations were approved at this meeting for kiosks, hand dryers, shuttle design increases or the retaining wall; council instead directed staff to obtain quotes and coordinate plans with private property owners and contractors.
