Arts Commission hears committee reports; director highlights Pacific Transit, grants review and airport art projects

The San Francisco Arts Commission on April 7 received a director’s report and committee updates covering recent public‑art installations, grant review progress, and civic design reviews for two major buildings.

Director of Cultural Affairs Ralph Remington told the commission April is California’s Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month, highlighted upcoming events including the California Arts and Culture Summit, and reviewed recent public art activity. He noted the temporary sculpture by Thomas J. Bridal on the Embarcadero has left the city and that Pacific Transit, a public art installation by Jesse Schlesinger on Judah Street, was completed March 29 with partners including the Port of San Francisco and Hauser & Wirth Gallery. Remington also said staff will present Cultural Equity Initiative funding recommendations to the Community Investments Committee on April 22 and to the full commission for final approval in May after reviewing a record 502 applications across four grant categories.

In committee reports, Commissioner Deborah Walker summarized Civic Design Review activity. The Phase 3 review of the San Francisco Water Department headquarters at 2000 Marin Street received final approval from the civic design review committee; staff said the project added 39 street trees and extended public artwork into the Marin Street façade. The committee also conducted a conceptual and Phase 1 review of the new Fire Station 13 at 447 Battery Street, discussing site circulation, traffic signal interactions, and a plan to reinstall an existing 1976 copper sculpture by Henry Marie Rose on the new façade. Commissioners raised concerns about the timeline in the public–private partnership and potential delays after demolition of the old building; the project team said they expect to complete construction once work begins.

The Visual Arts Committee reported on several public art opportunities. The committee recommended a temporary installation, “13 degrees north, 122 degrees east,” by a Filipino collective for the East Garden in the SoMa Pilipinas area (installation tentatively August 1, 2025–March 1, 2030) and reviewed finalists for two SFO Terminal 3 art opportunities. Committee members and commissioners emphasized the airport’s role as a global gallery and noted the airport projects provide major visibility for local artists.

The commission also received updates on gallery exhibitions at the SFAC Main Gallery and City Hall, a request‑for‑qualifications for the 2026 Art on Market Street poster series (deadline extended to April 21), and a staffing announcement for a new program associate on the community investments team.

Votes at a glance: the commission approved the minutes for March 3, 2025 (motion: Commissioner Beltran; second: Commissioner Brenzel) and the consent calendar (motion: Commissioner Beltran; second: Commissioner Chioda). Both motions passed unanimously. The commission also noted item 6 (Revolution orientation revision) was tabled to a future meeting.
