Las Cruces Public Schools staff presented the results of a year‑long district science adoption process at the April 1 work session and recommended TWIG Science for elementary and middle grade bands and Savvas for several high‑school science courses.
Process and participation District staff described a multi‑stage process: a state‑level review list, a district Textbook/Material Review (TMR) team that pre‑screened options and ensured Spanish‑language equity, then a Textbook Selection Committee (TSC) comprised of one representative per school that distributed sample materials to school sites for classroom review. Schools had from January through March to examine candidates, use materials in classrooms and complete rubrics.
Selection outcomes - Elementary (K–5) and middle school (6–8): TWIG Science was the committee’s recommended resource. - High school (by course): Savvas was the narrow winner for biology, chemistry and physics course options after school‑level reviews; BioZone and other publishers were considered and tested by teachers.
District staff emphasized the adoption will support district curriculum and that high‑school textbooks will serve as classroom sets and supplemental resources rather than a single daily text. The materials include online platforms and hands‑on kits; at the elementary level, students generally will use lab/workbook materials rather than carry full hardcover textbooks.
Staff acknowledged some teachers—particularly at the elementary level—deferred to colleagues more experienced with science instruction but the process included bilingual review for Spanish‑language materials. The board was invited to review materials in the district office; staff thanked teachers and community reviewers who participated in the adoption process.
The selection committee’s recommendation will move forward for procurement and phased implementation consistent with the district’s adoption timeline and budget.
