Somerville council committee presses administration for answers after month-long pool closure; chair seeks reports on chemical imbalance and maintenance process

Multiple school committee and city council members told the joint meeting they had received late or no direct notification about class and program cancellations and that some families found notices only on doors or via social media posts days after cancellations. School Committee members said third-grade swim lessons and local swim-team practice were disrupted.
Liaison staff told the joint committee that Parks & Recreation posts to social media, that the department uses 311 and email notifications for registered program participants, and that staff test pool water regularly. Committee members said the information in the administration memo did not match some parents' experiences and urged a full after-action review of communication lists and methods.
Chair Lance Davis made two motions during the meeting: first that the administration report to the council on the cause of the reported chemical imbalance at Ginny Smithers Pool and the process being used to address the imbalance; second that the administration develop a new process to address ongoing maintenance at the pool and report back to the council describing that process. Committee members indicated they wanted the administration to provide the ISD report on the incident and other documentation at the next meeting.
At the March 31 roll call, the committee approved the March 3 minutes and adjournment (Councilors Saeed, Klingen and Councilor "Kavitz" recorded as voting yes on the minutes and adjournment in the transcript). The pool-item motions were made on the record and the chair said they would be "out of committee"; the transcript shows the chair moved both motions and requested they be placed out of committee for follow-up. Committee members asked that Parks & Recreation, DPW and the pool director attend the next meeting to answer technical and communications questions.
The committee left the pool-item in committee for deeper follow-up at the next meeting and requested administration provide the underlying ISD report and a clear timeline for reopening and communications improvements.
