Poulsbo police seek $7,300 to replace six P320 handguns after CJTC safety decision

Poulsbo Police Chief Ron Griffin asked the City Council April 2 to approve a $7,300 budget amendment to replace six Sig Sauer P320 handguns and associated accessories with Glock systems after the Criminal Justice Training Commission (CJTC) concluded the P320 variant used by some agencies was not acceptable for CJTC-sanctioned training.
Chief Griffin said the CJTC’s study found incidents of unauthorized or accidental discharges related to the weapons configuration. “CJTC concluded ... they were not willing to allow those handguns to be used in their academy or in any training venue that CJTC sanctioned,” Griffin said. Because the CJTC-certified training is essential for officer qualification, the department plans a like-for-like operational change to Glock pistols and the necessary sights, lights and holsters to make a complete service system.
Griffin told council the department will conduct training internally on the Glock platform and that many officers are already familiar with Glock systems, so the department does not expect a training cost beyond internal range time. Councilmembers asked whether the replacement provides reserve weapons; Griffin said the requested replacement is a one-for-one swap and the department is maintaining additional reserve pistols to address equipment needs should a weapon be taken for investigation.
A council member moved to place the budget amendment on the consent agenda for approval; staff noted the amendment number as 205106 (Sig Sauer replacement). The council did not take a separate roll-call vote on the floor; the item was slated for the consent agenda where it will appear for formal adoption.
Separately, Chief Griffin said the department had also secured a Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC) traffic safety grant to buy radar units and hand-held sobriety equipment; staff asked council to acknowledge the grant receipt so budget lines can be adjusted.
