Commission offers proclamations, honors local students and showcases Miramar arts programs

The Miramar City Commission opened its April 16 meeting with a series of presentations and proclamations honoring community organizations, student performers and volunteer efforts.
Mayor Wayne Messam presented a proclamation recognizing National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) Realtors Week and invited Tamika Moses, president of the South Florida chapter, to brief the commission on NAREB’s focus on fair housing and pathways to home ownership. The commission also proclaimed Arbor Day (April 30) and April 2025 as National Volunteer Month, recognizing local volunteer organizations including Hope for Society Foundation and its volunteer work at the mayor’s annual longest table event.
The commission recognized the Miramar High School cheer team for competitive achievements and presented a proclamation declaring April 17, 2025, as Coach Tanya Jones Day. Coach Jones addressed the commission, thanking the mayor, school principal and family for support and said she planned to continue giving back to the city.
The Everglades High School Jazz Ensemble performed a short set, and staff from the Cultural Affairs Department previewed the fourth annual Miramar Student Community Showcase scheduled for May 15 at the Miramar Cultural Center; staff said the showcase will feature more than 200 student performers and tickets are $5.
Members of the Miramar Teen Council Advisory Board reported on a March trip to the National League of Cities conference in Washington, D.C., describing workshops, group collaboration and visits to museums. Commissioners thanked the students and staff chaperones for representing the city.
Economic Development and Housing Director Anita Fane Taylor brought forward the department’s National League of Cities diversity award for the Miramar Business Academy (separately noted); the commission recognized department staff and asked officials to join a photo with the award.
The presentation block drew applause from the commission and no public speakers were recorded during the ceremonial items.
