Dixon Unified reports March enrollment dip and recognizes 22 elementary students reclassified as English proficient

Dixon Unified reported that district enrollment as of March was down by 43 students compared with the previous year, Assistant Superintendent for Education Services reported at the April 17 board meeting.
By site, the report said Anderson is up 37 students, Gretchen Higgins is down 17, Tremont down 15, JKMS down 2, Dixon High School down 78 and Maine Prairie High School up 32. Overall, the district netted a loss of 43 students, the assistant superintendent said. Gretchen Higgins had the highest attendance rate for March at 94.28%, the update noted.
Principals and staff recognized schools that improved attendance. Principal Arias of Maine Prairie described classroom routines that support daily attendance and presented a “Bulldog award” to Matthew Dennis for exemplary attendance and leadership.
The board also recognized 22 elementary students who met the district’s reclassification criteria for elementary multilingual learners. The EL coordinator described the district’s reclassification requirements, which include a level 3 score on the district’s English assessment (Alta), a favorable teacher evaluation and parent notification; the district uses i-Ready diagnostics for reading at the grade level as part of the process.
Names read aloud during the recognition included students from several sites; the list in the board packet will serve as the formal record. Board members thanked staff and parents for their work supporting attendance, multilingual learners and English reclassification.
The presentation concluded with the board inviting public questions; the assistant superintendent said she would return with additional details if requested.
