Commission approves column replacements and bars stuccoing of south wall at 118 North Campbell Street rectory

The City of El Paso Historic Landmark Commission approved alterations to the rectory at 118 North Campbell Street, allowing the front columns to match recently proposed newel posts, requiring side columns be replaced in kind, and directing that the south‑facing wall not be stuccoed.

Preservation Office staff member Moe explained the rectory is an independent landmark built in 1892 and that many changes have occurred over time. Staff said the existing front columns show deterioration at the bases and that historic photographs indicate the building has had different porch treatments historically. ‘‘Replacement of missing features shall be substantiated by documentary, physical, or pictorial evidence,’’ Moe said while outlining the recommendation that the columns be replaced in kind and that the south wall remain unstuccoed.

Contractor Mario Chavez, who identified himself as the general contractor on the job, told the commission the team plans to use cedar posts for the columns and will paint them to match the existing finish. Chavez also said they planned to use a hardy cement‑board detail for exterior trim in some locations for durability. Commissioners suggested adding a standoff at the column bases so the wood would not sit directly in contact with water.

The commission made a motion to approve the front columns to match the proposed newel posts (as submitted), to replace the side columns in kind, and to keep the south wall unstuccoed. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Staff will handle some non‑visible column replacements administratively.
