Michael Vaughn, founder and executive director of Urban Coders Guild, told the Public Works Committee he returned to Tulsa after a decade abroad and established a nonprofit to provide computer science education to middle- and high-school students.
"I'm here to listen, I'm here to learn, I'm here to offer my expertise," Vaughn told councilors. He described Urban Coders Guild work embedded in several schools, including programming at McLean and Central, and said the organization provides workforce-development pathways for students who otherwise may not remain in Tulsa for secondary education.
Committee members praised Vaughn's focus on junior-high programming. Councilor Archie and others urged him to bring policy suggestions to the council and the African American Affairs Commission if confirmed. The committee did not vote on Vaughn's appointment; councilors said they will take up confirmation at 5 p.m. April 30 on the second floor.
Vaughn identified himself as a native of Tulsa and said he spent about 10 years living in Tokyo before returning to serve the community. He told the committee Urban Coders Guild has held summer programming at TU and hosted cybersecurity and coding experiences for youth.
No formal vote occurred during the committee discussion; the confirmation will be considered at a later meeting.
