Douglas County approves 2025 Natural and Cultural Heritage grant recommendations

The Douglas County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously on April 16 to approve the Heritage Conservation Council’s recommendations for the 2025 Natural and Cultural Heritage Grant Program.
Caitlin Amerlin, the county’s heritage conservation coordinator, told commissioners the council received 26 applications requesting just over $1 million — the second‑largest pool the program has seen. The council prioritized projects that showed strong public impact and geographic diversity. To spread limited funds, the council funded a larger number of projects at smaller amounts rather than awarding a single large grant.
Amerlin described the council’s process and said applicants who receive partial awards will work with staff to amend scopes and formal grant agreements; applicants may decline partial funding without penalty. Commissioners noted the value of geographic distribution and of continuing outreach to applicants who fell short this year.
The motion to approve the grant award recommendations passed 5-0. Amerlin and several council members were in the meeting to answer questions; staff will notify applicants and complete grant agreements.
