Donna Finch, community services director, explained the two‑phase application cycle (Phase 1 for July–December events; Phase 2 for January–June) and the eligibility criteria: applicants must be Corona‑based 501(c)(3) nonprofits; events must be open to the public and advance tourism, community vibrancy, multicultural programming, or resident quality of life.
Phase 1 awards recommended for approval totaled $9,123 and covered eight events, six of which were returning recipients (Broadway at Circle City, Chamber Patriots Day event, Chamber trade/stay event, Lions Club pancake breakfast, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Light the Night, Amber Waves of Grain). The two phase‑1 additions were a Holocaust remembrance event and a Remembrance / Safe Streets event. Staff estimated Phase 2 (to return in October) will include roughly 10 events and about $20,000 in requests, for a projected $29,123 in support for FY26, slightly under the prior year’s outlay.
Councilmember Jackie Casillas praised the two‑phase process and the diversity of applicants. The council voted 5‑0 to approve the Phase 1 recommendations. Staff will bring Phase 2 awards to council in October.
