Tennessee House adopts $59.7 billion budget after contentious floor debate

The Tennessee House of Representatives on April 16 adopted a $59.7 billion fiscal 2026 budget after a daylong floor debate that included multiple late-filed amendments, sharply contested votes and repeated complaints about the speed of the process.

The approved plan totals $59,700,000,000, "50 percent of that comes from state appropriations," said House Finance Chairman Gary Hicks during the floor overview. The package relies on a mix of recurring state revenues and nonrecurring sources including federal funds, department reversions and investment earnings, Hicks said.
