U.N. brief: Revitalized peace agreement remains sole framework for breaking cycle of violence in South Sudan

At the U.N. noon briefing, the spokesperson relayed reports from Nicholas Haysom, head of the U.N. mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), who told Security Council members that the revitalized peace agreement remains the only viable framework to break the cycle of violence in South Sudan. Haysom said U.N. mediation and diplomacy are underway alongside regional partners, including the African Union.
The briefing said humanitarian needs are massive: about 9,300,000 South Sudanese—approximately three-quarters of the population—require some form of humanitarian assistance, and children make up about half of that total. The U.N. humanitarian response planning for South Sudan this year requires $1,700,000,000 to support close to 5,400,000 people, the spokesperson said.
The Security Council was scheduled to reconvene in the afternoon to hear further briefings on the Great Lakes region and to receive remarks from the special envoy and UNICEF's executive director.
