Summary
The U.N. briefing highlighted reports of armed groups taking over Zamzam displacement camp near El Fasher, killing and preventing civilians and aid workers from leaving, and drone attacks in Khartoum that disrupted power and water services.
At the noon briefing, Stephanie Tremblay reported deeply disturbing accounts from North Darfur after an alleged takeover of Zamzam displacement camp near El Fasher by armed groups. She said civilians, including humanitarian workers, were reportedly prevented from leaving and that survivors spoke of killings, sexual violence and burned homes.
"Access constraints, a critical fuel shortage, and a volatile security environment are severely disrupting humanitarian operations in El Fashir," Tremblay said. She added that health services and water treatment had been particularly impacted.
Tremblay also cited recent drone attacks in Khartoum state on April 14 that damaged power infrastructure and left large parts of Umbadah, Karari and Omdurman without electricity or clean water. She called on all parties to the conflict to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian access and welcomed international efforts, including funding announced at a recent London conference on Sudan.
The spokesperson urged increased international support to maintain delivery of essential aid to the most vulnerable in Sudan and reiterated the secretary-general's call to end the conflict.
