Redding mayor’s planning commission appointments approved amid public debate

Murray argued that commissioners who had served on prior planning processes had familiarity with nearly three years of meetings, workshops and community input on the riverfront project.
Other public comments were mixed. Lane Rickard spoke in support of Erin Ryan for a commission seat (a separate public comment), saying she would be "a fantastic advocate on the planning commission." Benjamin Norwein opposed the mayor's nominations on the basis of experience and perceived political partisanship, saying the council should "show that appointments are made on merit, not political alignment."
Council members discussed the mayor's prerogative to nominate and the value of continuity. Mayor Pro Tem Aaron Resner, participating remotely, said he would support the appointments and urged broader recruitment for future openings. Council members also debated whether leaving two seats open for a full term set a precedent.
Blake Nance was not in the chamber; the mayor said Nance was on vacation. The council proceeded with the nominations despite some members expressing a preference for retaining at least one incumbent commissioner.
The council took the motion to approve the appointments and recorded the vote. The nominations will be processed in accordance with the city's usual appointment procedures.
