Brookfield selectmen on April 23 adopted an updated building-permit application, a permanent building-permit form and a new home-occupation/business application intended to clarify when a home-based activity must be registered with the town.
Selectmen said the home-occupation form was designed to align with town zoning requirements and to reduce future enforcement issues by clarifying when residents must notify the town of a business run from a residence. The board approved a fee schedule for building permits of $6 per $1,000 of assessed value, with a $50 minimum fee.
During discussion board members asked whether planning-board approval is required for every building permit and noted the application includes a checkbox for “does not apply” when the planning board is not involved. The code-enforcement officer and town staff had reviewed the forms in advance; the board agreed the code officer or planning board would be indicated where applicable.
Selectmen also discussed practical steps for delivering permits to contractors or homeowners, noting that the town now has an email address and that staff can email an official copy when someone cannot pick up a paper permit. The board directed staff to post the new home-occupation application on the town website and news page and to use existing channels to notify residents about the change.
The motions to adopt the applications were made, seconded and carried by voice vote.
