Walton urges SFMTA to paint red zones at all crosswalks to implement statewide daylighting law

Supervisor Walton introduced a resolution Dec. 3 urging the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to implement painted red zones at all crosswalks and intersections to comply with Californias daylighting law.
Walton told the board the statewide daylighting law will be fully enforceable beginning Jan. 1, 2025, and that painting red curb zones would provide a clear, visible reminder to drivers and reduce the risk of citations for residents who may be unaware of the new enforcement. "Painted red zones offer a clear and visible reminder for everyone to comply with the state's daylighting law, and it will reduce the risk of citations as well as protect low income families from predatory fees," Walton said.
Walton said SFMTA announced warnings earlier in the year but urged the agency to take the further step of painting permanent red curb zones across the city to promote equity and clarity. The resolution was submitted with co-sponsors supervisors Safai, Preston, Melgar, Chan and Peskin. The item was introduced during the new business portion of the meeting and no vote on the resolution was recorded in the transcript on Dec. 3.
Next steps: The resolution will be referred to the appropriate committee or to SFMTA for consideration; the transcript does not show a committee referral or a vote during this meeting.
