Board amends police code to ban vehicle ‘sideshows,’ approves ordinance on first reading

The Board of Supervisors amended and passed on first reading an ordinance to add prohibitions in the police code against vehicle “sideshows” and to make violations a misdemeanor.
Supervisor Shamann Dorsey moved a textual amendment to the ordinance’s findings to clarify prior enforcement: he asked the record to state that 67 vehicles were seized, “including 8 from sideshows and 59 others from reckless evasion,” and to describe typical street takeover maneuvers such as donuts and burnouts. Supervisor Dorsey formally moved to amend the file; Supervisor Safaie seconded the motion. The board took the motion without recorded objection and the ordinance was amended as read into the record.
The amended ordinance was passed on first reading at the Oct. 1 meeting; the sponsor noted the amendment is sufficiently substantive to require a final vote at second reading at a subsequent meeting.
What’s next: The ordinance will return for the required second reading and final adoption at a future board meeting. The amendment inserted by the board will appear in the findings when the matter returns for that vote.
