The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Oct. 26 passed on first reading an ordinance extending a local COVID‑19 era limit on residential evictions through Dec. 31, 2021. The measure, sponsored by Supervisor Preston, continues a local bar on so‑called no‑fault evictions (evictions other than for nonpayment, health or safety violations or under the Ellis Act) that had been set to expire at the end of September.
“There's been a lengthy discussion about limiting COVID‑related nonpayment evictions,” Preston told the board, and the ordinance continues a local ban on all evictions other than those for nonpayment, violence or health and safety reasons, or the Ellis Act. Preston described the extension as the twelfth local eviction protection ordinance his office has advanced since the pandemic began. He said the local limit complements other measures including rent‑relief funds and tenant right‑to‑counsel programs that together aim to keep residents housed during the recovery.
The board took the item on first reading without objection; sponsors said they will continue work on longer‑term questions about how revenue and housing stability programs should be aligned with local eviction‑prevention policies.
