The Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted several resolutions (items 45–49) on July 13, including one (item 45) that the clerks and several supervisors described as supporting the right of Dignity Health security officers to organize. Several supervisors signed on as cosponsors on the floor before the roll call.
The measure drew public comment: multiple callers representing SEIU United Healthcare Workers (UHW) and security officers at Dignity Health hospitals urged the Board to call on hospital management to recognize the will of workers who say they have signed union authorization cards or, at minimum, to permit a free and fair vote. Callers reported on‑the‑job safety concerns during the pandemic, inadequate PPE early in COVID‑19, disparity in pay and benefits compared with other hospital staff, and threats to workers from workplace violence. Callers included officers and organizers who identified as SEIU UHW members and longtime San Francisco residents.
Following public comment the Board approved the adoption of items 45–49 without committee reference; supervisors added themselves as cosponsors to item 45 during the adoption roll call. The clerk recorded the package as adopted unanimously.
Supervisors acknowledged the concerns raised and several asked Dignity Health management to engage with workers on safety, pay and recognition matters. The adopted resolution signals Board support for employees’ rights to choose union representation or to have a free election.
