Ronan said the statement would be read during Native American Heritage Month and year‑round as an acknowledgement of the first people of the land and their ongoing connection. She said the land acknowledgement is not a substitute for other actions and that she hopes to work with American Indian community leaders on expanded measures, including support for the American Indian Cultural District and increased funding and political representation.
Supervisor Peskin said several state agencies already undertake similar acknowledgements and expressed support for the motion. Ronan said she would send the item to committee so the board can consider the language and the broader policy implications; the Human Rights Commission and American Indian community partners are working on parallel statements.
The board did not adopt the reading that day; the motion will be considered in committee.
