Supervisor Cohen requests hearing on Hunters Point Shipyard cleanup, urges 100% retesting of Parcel G

"This week we have had expectant families contacting my office with real fears about giving birth while living at the shipyard and raising their children on what is widely perceived to be toxic land," Supervisor Cohen said in remarks introducing the hearing request. She said the Navy's handling of the cleanup and communications with residents had been inadequate and called for stronger federal accountability.

Cohen specifically asked that the Navy retest Parcel G at 100 percent and provide a clear timeline for when the cleanup will be completed. She referenced reports that consultant Tetra Tech had cut corners and alleged falsification of test data and described community anxiety about the safety of residences located on or near the shipyard.

Several supervisors added their names as co-sponsors of the hearing request, including Supervisor Kim, Supervisor Peskin, Supervisor Feuer and others. Supervisor Cohen said the hearing would probe delays, test protocols and Navy communications and would seek concrete answers for residents regarding health and safety.

Cohen called for transparency and accountability and said the board should press the Navy and relevant federal agencies for a plan that includes timelines, full retesting where necessary and protections for residents.
