Board to accept $75 million Chan–Zuckerberg gift for San Francisco General equipment and capital needs

The Board of Supervisors on Feb. 10 approved a resolution to accept a $75 million gift to San Francisco General Hospital from Dr. Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg, the Board President said during remarks about the donation.
President Breed described the gift as "what we believe to be the largest single gift from private individuals ever given to a public hospital in The United States." The resolution authorizes the city to accept and expend the funds through the San Francisco General Foundation's Heart of Our City capital campaign.
Breed said the gift will pay for specialized equipment and fixtures, including "psychological monitors to improve the tracking of patient vital signs," interventional radiology equipment, equipment for medical-surgical and operating rooms to reduce emergency-department boarding and surgery cancellations, "flex ICU smart beds to reduce patient falls and pressure ulcers," and mobile CT scanners to reduce patient transport needs. "In short, this gift will save lives, a lot of lives," she said.
The Board record notes the city's prior investments in rebuilding General Hospital, including a voter-approved bond in 2008 and a city capital commitment; the foundation campaign27s gift is intended to cover equipment and furnishings that bond funds cannot finance. The resolution passed with the sponsors indicating support and no roll-call objection recorded for acceptance.
The resolution also acknowledges city partnerships and fund-raising efforts and directs related administrative steps to accept and expend the gift for the hospital's capital needs.
