Sponsor Supervisor Weiner said the designation "will help ensure that this giant sequoia is preserved for future generations to enjoy." He described the tree as "nearly a hundred feet tall" with a trunk "approximately 12 feet in circumference" and said a certified arborist had found the specimen to be "a vibrant and healthy specimen." Weiner asked for support and moved an amendment to tie the official acts to the ordinance text (adding language "as detailed in the ordinance" on page 1, line 7). Supervisor Campos seconded the amendment and asked to be added as a cosponsor.
President Chiu announced the amendment was made, and the ordinance was passed on first reading "without objection." The sponsor noted strong neighborhood support from the Corbett Heights neighborhood association and neighbors.
Why it matters: The designation provides formal preservation status for an uncommon large sequoia in the city and implements local landmark protections to limit removal or alteration of the tree.
