Campos cited public-health data and local trends in new HIV diagnoses, saying San Francisco had not rolled out PrEP to the full extent possible and that fewer than 1,000 people in the city had been prescribed PrEP in 2012-2013. "This is why today I am introducing a budget supplement for $801,000 to increase funding for PrEP in San Francisco," Campos said.
Supervisor Wiener supported the introduction and argued increasing awareness, access and reducing stigma around PrEP could significantly reduce new infections. Campos said the Department of Public Health had been in contact with other jurisdictions to design patient and provider navigation services. The item was submitted for consideration; no final appropriation vote occurred at the Sept. 23 meeting.
