The Riverside Township Board on an August meeting approved a $14,000 community partnership grant to People Care to support its transportation and client services for seniors.
People Care Executive Director Judy Mantel told the board the nonprofit provides transportation across Riverside Township to Riverside, North Riverside, Brookfield, Lyons and a small portion of La Grange Park and is seeing an influx of new clients. “We are booming with new clients,” Mantel said, adding that the agency is averaging about one to two new clients per week and logged 2,940 phone calls to date this year as it expanded tracking of incoming calls.
Mantel said the agency launched a public-service partnership with Loyola Hospital’s Mission System Integration to help clients select and document a health-care power of attorney, and that the group is also expanding social offerings such as a men’s group called the Bounders and Geezers. She described the service as voluntary and not affiliated with the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Trustee Heilenbach moved to approve the $14,000 grant and Trustee DeCostello seconded. Clerk Reyes called the roll; all voting members present voted yes and the motion carried.
The presentation also included examples of community response: Mantel cited thank-you notes and an increase in participation in People Care activities, including requests to ride in the township’s Fourth of July parade.
The board did not specify any additional conditions on the grant beyond the approval. No amendment or contingency was recorded in the meeting minutes.
