Evansville historic commission approves roof replacement at 605 Southeast Riverside

The Historic Preservation Commission of Evansville on April 9 approved an application to replace the roof at 605 Southeast Riverside after the homeowner said the existing layers were failing and causing interior damage.

Owner Chris Brown told the commission he owns 605 Southeast Riverside and currently has an asphalt roof that is leaking. He said the asphalt sits over older three-tab shingles, underlayment and an underlying slate layer. "We currently have an asphalt roof, and it is leaking," Brown said. "It's leaking badly." He told the commission the work will remove all layers, install new underlayment and replace the roof with asphalt shingles.

Commission staff said the application was routed to the commission because historic material would be removed rather than overlaid, which requires commission approval under local guidelines. Brown said the older materials were covered by multiple layers and were not visible from the street.

A commissioner moved to approve the application. During a roll-call vote commissioners voted in favor; several named commissioners recorded "aye." The chair announced unanimous approval and directed staff to provide Brown with a signed copy of the approval so he may obtain a permit.

The application filed with the commission is listed as 25-HPOCA-01605 (605 Southeast Riverside). The owner asked the commission to allow replacement with dimensional asphalt shingles after removing layers down to sound decking and installing new underlayment. The commission did not record any conditions or amendments on the record when approving the application.

The approval permits the applicant to proceed with permit processing; staff will sign the approval and provide documentation so the owner may obtain his building permit.
