Commissioners take proposed commissary vending vendor for community corrections under advisement

Community corrections staff asked commissioners to consider a vendor that would place vending machines inside the community corrections facility to supply food and drink items for residents. Staff said the vendor’s model requires no county funding for product stocking, needs only a power source for machines, handles inventory and credit-card payments, and typically operates under a three-year contract that is negotiable.
The vendor would supply food and beverage vending only (not personal-hygiene items); community corrections staff explained hygiene products could be procured through other channels. Staff said La Porte County Community Corrections uses a similar vendor. The program manager said the vendor collects proceeds and provides a quarterly revenue share to the program; staff suggested a share of roughly 20–22 percent for the county program, subject to negotiation.
Commissioners said they had received the contract that morning and asked staff to propose changes; the board moved and seconded to take the proposal under advisement and to return with recommended contract edits and clearer terms. No final contract or funding decision was made at the meeting.
