Council approves new SR‑9 entry sign; beautification committee to fund installation

The Hurricane City Council approved a new entry sign design for State Route 9 after reviewing renderings and cost estimates presented by staff and the city’s beautification committee.
The council reviewed three color renderings prepared by a vendor and chose a metal cutout design with a rust/burnt color accent. Staff said the beautification committee has $5,000 budgeted this year for capital outlay and that additional city funds from a lightly used cleanup line could cover the remaining cost. The vendor’s quote in the packet was $6,714.58.
Council members also asked staff to check with the Utah Department of Transportation about mounting and lighting; staff said they would investigate whether downlighting on the sign could be installed and who would pay for service. Caden and Arthur presented the design options and noted UDOT aesthetics requirements would govern the final installed dimensions and finish.
Councilman Ellerman moved to approve the design and purchase at the quoted amount; Councilman Preet seconded. The council voted unanimously to proceed and directed staff to return with final mounting, lighting plans and any UDOT requirements.
