Board approves communications upgrade, calendar adjustments and policy review; several consent items carried

The Papillion La Vista Community Schools Board of Education approved several administrative actions April 14, including a mass-communication system upgrade, acknowledgment of a policy review, and calendar adjustments to recover instructional time lost to weather.
Doctor Villarreal presented an amended contract to upgrade the district’s mass-communication tools, including desktop and mobile app enhancements and updates to the PLCS mobile app next school year. The board approved the contract addendum and upgrades to Messages XR Enterprise and Teacher Communications Enterprise; the motion passed by roll-call vote with all members recorded as yes.
The board also acknowledged its review of Series 3000 (business services) board policies after administration reported no recommended changes. Miss Siri presented a recommendation to adjust the 2024–25 school-year calendar to regain instruction time lost to weather: the proposal converts an April 21 professional-development day into a student day, adds a half preschool day on April 28, and modifies seniors’ last days to May 8 (full day) and May 9 (checkout/graduation practice and celebration), moving the staff professional-development day to May 27.
Miss Siri and other administrators said the district lost seven instructional days to weather this year; the April 21 date was selected to provide meaningful in-year instructional time and to support implementation training for a new elementary English-language-arts curriculum. The calendar change was approved on a unanimous roll-call vote.
Other items approved by consent included routine personnel and business items the board grouped under “action by consent.” The board also heard informational briefings: a request-for-proposal for student-technology device purchases will close April 16 and district staff provided a legislative update on bills being tracked at the Nebraska Legislature. Administration noted the state is considering changes to library-checkout notification and electronic-device policy and that special-education option-transfer legislation remains under review.
Motions on the consent and calendar items passed unanimously. Board members and staff said they will continue to refine district calendars to reduce reliance on end-of-year make-up days and will report back on implementation and any necessary follow-up.
